Xinjiang is one of the most interesting regions in China, packed with history, ethnic variety, superb landscapes and vibrant Central Asian culture. Kashgar has been a Silk Road trading centre for over 2000 years and traders from Kazakhstan, Krygyzstan and Pakistan continue to fuel the city with great atmosphere. Kashgar still sparks images of a remote desert oasis, the sole outpost of civilization in China leading from the vast deserts of Xinjiang to the icy peaks of the Karakoram. Even though it is no longer so remote, Kashgar retains an intoxicating air of the exotic, mainly due to its fascinating ethnic mix of Uyghurs, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks and a growing number of Chinese. Exotic bazaars, colourful silks, knives and jewelry vie for your attention. Once a week Kashgar’s population swells by 50,000 as people stream in to the Sunday Market - without doubt the most mind-boggling bazaar in Asia.
