Yangon
Yangon (formerly Rangoon) gives a very different impression
from other Asian capitals of similar size. It is still easy going and seems full
of trees and shade. Buddhist stupas, Hindu temples, Christian churches, Muslim
mosques and colonial architecture make it one of the most exotic and striking
cities in Southeast Asia. The highlight of any visit to Yangon, and indeed to
Myanmar itself, is Shwedagon Paya. For Burmese Buddhists, Shwedagon is the most
sacred of all Buddhist sites in the country. In the heat of the day, the stupa
glitters bright gold. As the setting sun casts it last rays on the golden dome,
you can feel the magic in the air.
