Si Phan Don (four thousand islands) is situated just north
of the Cambodian border in the Mekong River. During the dry months between
monsoons the river recedes and leaves behind several hundreds of islands.
The largest of the permanent islands are inhabited year-round and offer glimpses
of southern Laos river-oriented village life. Don Khong is quite scenic; with
rice fields, low hills and wats (temples) all over the island.
